Erleigh Road Community Garden

We are a small community garden located in East Reading, tucked in amongst the gardens of the neighbouring terrace houses and behind St Luke’s parish hall.

Do you enjoy growing plants or want to learn more about gardening? Or just want to enjoy meeting others in a garden?

Come and join us in our secluded community garden in East Reading. We welcome beginners to gardening through to those with many years of experience and people of all ages.

Working together…

We run regular gardening sessions to maintain and develop the garden, and teach people about gardening and the joys of growing plants. We learn how to

  • sow seeds

  • grow flowers, fruit and vegetables

  • prune trees and bushes

  • harvest fruit and vegetables, and

  • even cook with what we’ve grown.

Meeting, learning and working in the garden can be a refreshing break from the routines of home life and a welcome opportunity to engage with nature.

… and socialising together

Gardening sessions finish with relaxing over refreshments - a cup of tea or coffee and often some home baking. Chatting together at the end of each session we get to know each other and hear about what is going on in our area. We also enjoy occasional workshops, open afternoons, plant sales and parties.

Special events

We also organise one-off events that welcome everyone to our garden. These include open days and plant sales when we invite people to look round the garden, enjoy refreshments and buy plants and fruit from the garden.

In the early summer open day we have many vegetable plants, herbs, soft fruit cuttings and other plants for sale. The autumn open day is scheduled for when our grapes are ready to pick so we can share fresh grapes and grape juice.

At both open days we generally have jams and preserves for sale, made using ingredients from the garden. We also have apple pressing sessions using donated apples.

Other events use the garden space for art and craft activities such as:

  • gardening workshops

  • art sessions

  • creating willow obelisks or plant supports

  • pumpkin carving

  • wreath making, and

  • making bird boxes

Children’s activities

As well as a regular after-school gardening club during the summer months, we run additional activities for children, such as talks about insects and bug hunts in the garden, garden art, Easter egg hunts and pumpkin carving. We also cook with what we’ve grown - we’ve made pizzas, vegetable kebabs and fruit muffins.

There’s something for everyone throughout the year!
